Feeling New Strength

Unlike most of my works, the title of this piece came to me over a year after its composition. Its musical spirit and expressive character reminded me of Beethoven’s inscription in the Heiliger Dankgesang: “Neue Kraft fühlend” (“Feeling new strength”).

My initial inspiration was Bach’s “O Sacred Head” chorale, the first chords of which appear in the final moments of Feeling New Strength. But they are no longer the mournful notes of Bach; they are now an exclamation of triumph, a resounding cry of victory over illness—the subject of Beethoven’s Heiliger Dankgesang—and death—the principal villain in Bach’s St Matthew Passion, from which the chorale is drawn.
